MGB Camshaft Bearings

Cam bearings wear out with use just like any others.  Remember, the camshaft has eight fairly substantial lobes on it. Every time the camshaft rotates, it pushes open each of the eight engine valves. The valves are held tightly shut by the valve springs. The camshaft must overcome this spring pressure in order to open the valves. Because of this, camshaft bearings take a substantial beating. You can bet that your camshaft will be quite loose in its bearings. You’d never know it by grasping the end of the camshaft and wiggling it though-there will always be at least partial opening of one or more valves resulting in some pressure on the camshaft at all times. You will only feel “looseness” in your cam bearings if you remove the rocker arm assembly first.

Usually there is at least a few thou’ play in the camshaft bearings.

Don’t forget, because of the rocker arm ratio-A few thou’ less cam lift results in even more lost valve lift. That means that your valves won’t be opening fully. You’ll experience a loss of power because of this.

Worn bearings also allow critical engine oil pressure to leak away, further adding to engine wear.

Replacing the camshaft bearings is an easy job with the engine taken apart.

We recommend replacing these bearings during engine overhaul.

Fits all 1963 – 1980 MGBs.
